Essential Oils and Their Application on Active Packaging Systems: A Review

The food industry is continuously evolving through the application of innovative tools and ingredients towards more effective, safe, natural ecofriendly solutions to satisfy demands costumers. In this context, sources (i.e., leaves, seeds, peels or unused pulp) can entail a valuable source compounds, such as essential oils (EOs), with recognized antioxidant antimicrobial properties that be used additives in packaging applications. current trend incorporation EOs into diverse kinds biodegradable materials, edible films, thus developing active systems improved preservation offer benefits both by reducing waste improving management waste. may added material free encapsulated molecules, where, especially last option, has been revealed very promising. addition these lipophilic compounds provides end-product various bioactivities interest, which eventually extend shelf-life product preventing spoilage. Pairing extracted from agro-industrial by-products lead sustainable industry. Recent knowledge advances on issue will reviewed present work.
